HORACE WHITEHOUSE
(1907-1910 : 21), Private in the 1/5th Battalion, South Staffordshire
Regiment, was the son of Mr E Whitehouse of Bushbury Road, Heath Town,
Wolverhampton, and while there passed the Junior Local Examinations of both
Oxford and Cambridge with honours. In
1907 he entered the school as the winner of a Town Scholarship and left after 3½
years, having reached the Lower Fifth. When war came he abandoned his preparation for the Civil
Service and at once enlisted. In
February 1915, he proceeded with his battalion to France and thereafter took
part in numerous engagements, all of which he passed through unscathed; but he
was killed on July 1st 1916, in the first great battle of the Somme.
