GEORGE
PARKES UNDERWOOD (1909-1913 : 19), was the only son of Mr & Mrs G R
Underwood, Wood Villas, Tettenhall Wood. At
school he was known as a good football player and a devotee of cycling and
boating. After passing the
Cambridge Junior Local examination, he left to begin a business career. The promise of success that he showed was cut short by the
war, and in June 1916, he became a Signaller in the Royal Naval Volunteer
Reserve. He received training at
the Crystal Palace and Chatham, was transferred to Granton, and went to sea on
H. M. Trawler ‘Repro’. On April
26th 1917, his vessel was reported as sunk (presumably by a mine),
and no survivors were ever found.
