EDMUND GABRIEL RICE (1914-1915 :
18), Lieutenant, Royal Air Force, was the only son of Dr C E Rice, recently of
Wolverhampton and now of Coventry. He
entered the Royal Naval Air Service in June 1917, received training at the
Crystal Palace and at Manston near Margate, and was sent to France with the rank
of Sub-Lieutenant in the following December.
He remained on active service in France until March of this year, when,
while scouting at a height of 18,000 feet, he fainted.
Recovering after falling to 4,000 feet, he was able to bring his machine
safely to earth behind our lines, but he was invalided home.
Being then made an instructor, he was sent to the air station at Redcar,
Yorkshire on April 29th, and there he met with a fatal accident while
flying on May 3rd. He
was buried with full military honours at Coventry on May 8th.
