STANLEY CHARLES HARRIS (1907-1908 :
25), Lance-Corporal, Queen’s Own Staffordshire Yeomanry, was the only son of
Mr W S Harris of Sedgley Road, Wolverhampton.
From the school he entered the works of the Sunbeam Motor Car Company,
and in 1911 he joined his county Yeomanry, with whom he trained in the annual
camps. Immediately on the
declaration of war he was mobilised with his troop, and in September 1915, he
went out to Egypt and thence to Palestine.
From this service he never returned, for, after 101 days of suffering, he
died of enteric fever in hospital at Alexandra on September 11th
1918. He was a fine-spirited boy
and became a keen and efficient soldier. Before
the war he had gained a gold medal for shooting, and while on service he so
distinguished himself in musketry as to be made an Instructor and sniper.
He also passed an examination in water testing.
As a sniper he was on one occasion, with only four companions, told off
to act as a rear guard during the evacuation of wounded.
The Turks, confident in their numbers, came on, but the fire was too
deadly for them, and the rear guard successfully covered the movement and
effected its own retreat. Cheery,
active and conscientious, Harris was an exemplary son and a thorough soldier.
