ARTHUR
MOLINEAUX CULLWICK (1907-1908 : 25), Private in the 11th Battalion,
Cheshire Regiment, was the youngest son of Mr & Mrs Frank Cullwick of 31
Oaklands Road, Wolverhampton. On
leaving school he was articled to a firm of chartered accountants.
When war broke out he several times volunteered for service and was as
often rejected, even when he made direct application to the War Office for
clerical work. But at the end of 1916 he was passed in the A1 category and
sent to Rugeley for training. In
May last he went out to France, steadfastly bracing himself to duties for which
he was by nature unfitted. On
August 1st he was dangerously wounded near Ypres.
After an operation at the base, he was sent to the Canadian Hospital at
le Tréport, where for three weeks he was comforted by the presence of his
parents and where his elder brother Frank, serving in a siege
battery of the R.G.A was allowed to visit him.
A leg was amputated and recovery seemed probable, but seven weeks of
suffering ended in his death on September 20th.
His gentle disposition and unassuming character, well remembered by his
schoolfellows, had endeared him to those who ministered to his needs in
hospital.
