LESLIE VICTOR COLLEY (1907-1912 : 19), Private in the 18th Battalion,
the King’s (Liverpool) Regiment was the youngest son of Mr & Mrs Joseph
Colley of Hillingdon, Bilston. At
school he gained prizes for work and in the sports, and on leaving he entered
the engineering department at the Spring Vale Steel Works.
Having joined the Territorials in 1912 and obtained the N.R.A bronze
medal and a medal and other prizes for proficiency, he was mobilised on the
outbreak of war. Early in 1915 he
went to France with the 46th North Midland Division, Cyclist Corps.
Invalided home, he went through special training so well as to be
recommended for a commission, but in December 1916, before the appointment was
made, he was drafted into the K.L.R and sent again to France.
At the great battle of Arras on April 9 1917, he was severely wounded,
and died on April 12th. “An
excellent soldier in every way and a great favourite”.
