The American Civil War Simulation

Teacher Notes

This simulation is designed as a stand-alone resource for teaching students about the events of the American Civil War.

The worksheet is divided into two main tasks:
Task 1 (The Battles of the Civil War) gets students to provide a narrative overview of the main events (and generals) of the war;
Task 2 (Why did the North win the War?) gets students to provide an analytical breakdown of the causes for the North's victory, broken down into Military, Political and Economic factors.

Both of these tasks can be completed as the game progresses. Teachers may wish to ask half the class to focus on one task, and the other half of the class to focus on the other. Students can later work in pairs / small groups to help each other complete the worksheet in full.

Extension tasks are provided for each of the two main tasks. In addition, follow-up activities are suggested at the end of the worksheet.

A complete scheme of work, including interactivities, quizzes and worksheets, can be found on the American Civil War Page of ActiveHistory.
