A civil war is a war between people within the same country. The American Civil War (1861-65) was fought between the Northern states and the Southern states in America. Before 1861, these were joined together as one country: the United States of America.
However, the people in the North had very different attitudes to those in the South. On the one hand, Northerners believed in a strong central government, an industrial economy, and the eventual abolition of slavery. On the other hand, Southerners believed in strong local government, an agricultural economy, and the preservation of slavery.
In 1861, the Southern ("Confederate") states broke away from 'The Union' and elected their own President, Jefferson Davis. The Northern ("Unionist") states, led by President Abraham Lincoln, were determined to force them back into the Union.
So began a conflict that would take the lives of more than 600,000 men and injure another 375,000.
